The Big Fish Story:
I was fishing in Mexico in early December. I was using light Berkley monofilament and a topwater bait. The weather was heavily overcast, with occasional light mist. My partner clued me into a perfect combination of deep water and shallow structure. He was absolutely sure that this spot would hold the big one we were looking for. The fish exploded on the Zara Spook with a vengeance! I kept heavy pressure on the 4 pound test Trilene for fear the fish would take me into the dozens of nearby brushpiles. The fish made two tremendous jumps, but the line held up great! The fish was quickly released after a quick photo. Thanks, Berkley!

The BerkleyBigFish Grand Prize Winner will be chosen in January 2009 from the 12 BerkleyBigFish Finalists. Finalists are not eligible for a second seat in the final 12 and cannot compete in additional monthly Abu Garcia® Leader-Board Challenges with any entries.

Thanks for the kind comments and show of support, everybody. This website has obviously been a huge success. Hundred of anglers, and thousands of photos--all in support of the outdoors and Berkley products--but also to support each other in the great sport of fishing. Great site, great product, and even better people. Best of luck to all of you...Bruce

Aquaman – thanks Buddy for the kind words. May I remind you that you beat this photo many months ago LOL! I have been fishing, finishing up the year end tourney events. We had the finals of the State Bass Championships three weeks ago and finished 4th there and just yesterday Captained out Club in the State Club Championships – we finished 7th there. Just a bunch of good ‘ol boys on the local club level having a good time, pretending to Hank, KVD and Roland LOL. I have been fishing and hanging with some of these guys for 25 years. Good memories.

Haha well I was fishing with my Berkley worms in my back pocket so that I wouldn't have to walk all the way back to the tackle box if a Bass stole it or something along those lines, so when I got the camera out I figured I'd grab em and snap a picture with them. Thanks again! =D

Thanks for your comments sitruc. We're lucky to have you on this site. Using 4 pound test is a challenge, and I love it, but sometimes I will upgrade to 6 or 8 pound test depending on conditions such as size of fish, presence of underwater structure, etc. I'm really a panfisherman at heart :-) so big fish are just an occasional bonus for me! Luckily I've found out that high quality line allows me to land a big fish when the opportunity arises.

Well, Berkley keeps adding new goodies to the participants on this site. Who knows? :) I've been pretty impressed with Berkley's efforts to keep things fresh and exciting.

You know what I think would be the coolest thing – after all 12 finalist are picked, and the overall winner is chosen in January of 09, BBF has a cocktail party the night before the Lucky Winner hits the water with Mr. Parker and ALL the category winners are there and finally meet, now THAT would be cool and something I would really look forward to. Any feed back?

We have extra rooms here at the house, please feel welcome to visit us in Oregon…. This June the sturgeon will be biting – I am talking 6-12 ft monsters… Thank you Aquaman…. I was sweating bullets at about fifteen minutes to the hour. I'd run out of gas. Earlier in the evening I was calling everybody I'd ever fished with to get them to join the site. My only ace in the hole was that my brother lives in California, and some of his West Coast fishin' buddies were ready to give me a boost. Then I found out they were out at the bars having sushi and beer!!! LOL!! I thought "Oh, NO!". But then the votes quit before the hour and it was all over. I think fifteen more minutes and KPangle would have kicked my tail. :)

1morecast....Aquaman is too much of a Gentleman to brag.... he got me - I think when it was all over he had 1048 and I had 1001, something like that. It was close but not as close as the score was… I think he coasted there at the end. And between he and Steelheadrich there might have been 75-100 points separating them. Steelheadrich did have the most points in Feb too.

I mean seriously, though I have yet to catch my 1st big bass on 4 pound XL, I do know that matching tackle with a ultra light Berkley Lightning rod with 4 pound XL for Bluegill, crappie and perch is just down right fun!! I saw your Bluegill, you were right, she is a pig. Did you see the bluegill (and other nice fish) posted by Corey in the new photo section, he has quite the fishing collection. I hope you don't mind that I have been pushing people to your Feb winning picture and check out your light line ways. I think it would be great to see how many are doing or will do what you have been doing. Also, I really didn't pay attention until recently the light line specialties steelheadrich and his friends are doing. You have addressed it several times, this is an excellent site to get new and better ideas. Chat with you soon...
Comment By:Aquaman
I posted the bluegill in the "other" category with a brief story. It's fun when people like you who have caught lots of big bass can still get excited over a bluegill. We are in Nebraska and are close to Omaha.
Comment By:Kpangle
Comment By:Kpangle Aquaman, You bet - put one on the site, that is what it is here for. But are you serious??? 2 pounders? That would be awesome. As I mentioned here earlier, I could plan a trip out East, or a quick flight in, what airports are you close to? So, should I bring my cases of Berkley fishing line or would you let me pull off one of your spools?
Comment By:Aquaman
We'll stay in touch for sure. I'd just like to make a general comment. Isn't it great what a strong showing some of the ladies are making this month? This is surely good for Berkley--and fishing in general. The more people, and the more variety of people, the better it is for a group like this.
Comment By:Kpangle
Hey Bud - sorry for the hassle, unbelievable. I was going to leave you my e-mail address here so we can share more fishing stories or maybe some fishing trips, but to be honest, I am not excited to have it on the web at this time. I hope that we can stay in touch. Good luck with the final contest!
Comment By:Kpangle
I'm really on no sites where you can get a hold of me per say. If you have a spot where I can find you and that would be easier, let me know and I will go there.
Comment By:Jacksdad
Let's let Kpangle get his own votes...I'm busting my tale here....
Comment By:Kpangle
I did look at the pics of the brush and the way you described how the fish moved out into deep water makes all the sense in the world! I literally took it that you were flippin into the middle of that stuff like we do on the Delta with 30 pound big game (yes I am a Big Game fan) with a Hvy 7' flippin stick. I am heading up to the John Day river in 2 weeks (look it up on line - great sm fishery) loaded with my 4 pound XL. I will give you a fishing report. Speaking of the Delta, did you see on the FLW site all the monstor LM caught? Check it out.
Comment By:Kpangle
Aquaman, you asked if I ever needed votes in the future you could help.... I need the voted Buddy :-) Any help you can provide would be great! We need to swap out a fishing trip.. I have never done the stipers. Have you had many small mouth trips? How about a salmon or steelhead on 4 lb? The salmon we get are from 20 - 45 pound kings in rivers covered with brush - no wider than 30 -50 ft. We have a heck of a time with 30 pound big game. Now the winter steelhead here in Oregon is a blast, the coastal fish will get as big as 15 pounds and I really believe a very good angler can get 'em with 4 pound.. I am not sure I am ready for that myself. We usually go with 8 or 10 pound XL depending on water clarity. Keep in touch -
Comment By:fishsniper
Nice fish. It is fun to fish topwater and apparently it produces. Please vote for fishsniper in the bass. Casting you five.
Comment By:AnglerAlex
I see you've posted a few pics. I found them!
Comment By:Aquaman
I've uploaded a photo showing the type of brush we were fishing.
Comment By:Aquaman
I wish I could draw you a picture as to why flipping could work in this situation. You'd have to understand the lake. We were fishing sheer cliffs in the Sierra Madre mountain range that plunged straight into 100+ feet of water. Consequently, if you threw to the deep water side of brush, the fish would lurch out of the brush piles into the deep clear water, and if you could make that first turn with the reel handle the fish was clear of any obstructions. I'll post another picture from the day before and I think you'll be able to see that we had no "shallows" to contend with. In the new picture the boat is actually in 225 feet of water. Amazing stuff.
Comment By:Kpangle
Thank you Sir. I will save the question of how to get away with flippin in brush with 4-6 pound next time. I have used the XL and XT for years. Really like the fluorocarbon as I do get more bites with it than I do with the same test in XL. I went to the Big Game a few years ago for the special applications, flippin - pitching wood & brush. Also like the Big Game for salmon and salt water. All this talk of fishing has me going to get the boat out - Thanks again Aquaman.

I've been a light line specialist for years. My favorite species to fish for are striped bass hybrids and bluegill. I almost never target largemouth, but when my buddy Bob asked me to go to Mexico I had to go. What a dream. The other anglers, including Ray Scott chuckled when they heard I had only packed 4 and 6 pound test, but as it turned out I did as well as anybody in the group. Actually Ray Scott has been really pushing the light tackle thing for largemouth for the last few years. He's even developed his own line of specialty rods for small tackle largemouth fishing. The lure I prefer to use when I do fish for bass with 4 pound test is actually a banjo minnow. Imagine that. I caught largemouth to 6 pounds for two days, then I switched to some Power craws so I could flip into the submerged brush piles of this Northcentral Mexican Lake. I didn't bring any topwaters at all, so I was extremely frustrated when Bob discovered an active topwater bite. He eventually noted my sadness and handed me one of the topwater baits. In spite of the fact that it was poorly matched to the 4 pound test I went ahead and tied it on with a palomar knot and hoped for the best. There really was quite a bit of luck involved, but as I've said earlier, it is often better to be lucky than good. The first jump that the bass made was actually as he took the lure. I was astounded at the menacing attack that the bass made on the lure. Fortunately I'm very familiar with fighting fish on light line, and since the line was brand new (only spooled a few hours earlier) I was able to land the fish in two, maybe three minutes. The cooler water temperatures worked in my favor as well. We wanted to write a story about the trip but Mr. Scott likes to keep things quiet in regards to his honey holes. I know this probably didn't help, but I could write volumes on targeting hybrids and bluegill on small diameter lines. I was using Trilene XL 4 lb., .008 diameter off the big 1,000 yard spool. I have to get the bulk quanitites because I'll go through over 10,000 yards per year. I hope this didn't bore you, but it was a good question.
Comment By:Kpangle
Aquaman, I am going to try your light line technique here in Oregon for our smallies, I usually go down to 6 pound fluorocarbon but would like to see how the 4 lb holds up. Are you casting XL, XT, fluorcarbon vanish or ? I might need you to tell me how to cast a big top water lure like a zara spook on 4 pound line.... that has to be an art in its self. Thanks for any tips you can provide as I have no desire of leaving lures in a fish because of using to light of line. Thanks again!
Comment By:Aquaman
